Τίτλος Ομιλίας
==============
A coherent sparse block grid traversal algorithm for real-time volume rendering

Περίληψη Ομιλίας
================
Volume rendering refers to a set of techniques for visualizing structures of sampled data. Applications of volume rendering include scientific and medical visualizations, special effects in animated movies and more recently video games and real-time simulations. Due to volume rendering being a computationally expensive task, many acceleration techniques have been introduced. These techniques aim to reduce rendering times by optimising the algorithm, approximating, or utilising for specific system architectures. The presentation will start with a short review of the most established volume rendering algorithms and acceleration techniques, and some of their imminent advantages and disadvantages. Second, two popular processor architectures will be discussed, focusing on some key characteristics in respect these algorithms. The architectures examined are the latest generation of Intel IA-32 processors and the new Cell Broadband Engine. Finally, a novel algorithm will be introduced, based on ray-casting, which is able to traverse volume data coherently with minimal memory overhead, thus offering a solution to limitations imposed by algorithms introduced previously. The algorithm can exploit the most recently introduced features of modern CPUs and benefit from characteristics of their architecture.

Βιογραφία Ομιλητή
=================
Ioannis Makris graduated from the Informatics department of the TEI Athens in 2004. He received an MSc in High Performance Computing from University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh Parallel Computing Center in 2005 and is expected to receive an MSc in Vision Imaging and Virtual Environments from UCL, for which he pursued his dissertation in the CGlab of the University of Saarland. His scientific interests include hybrid cluster programming models, parallel graphics, real-time techniques for global illumination and non-photorealistic rendering.
